Short Film Progress

I’ve been really hard at work creating this short film.  You may remember my many ideas from previous posts.  Well, I eventually settled on “Go Ahead” and have been working on fleshing it out since then.  After pitching my favorite ideas to my classmates and mentors I began the first pre-visualization step of creating storyboards to study different framing compositions and camera angles.  After getting these storyboards to a place I liked, I scanned them into my computer. Then I set away to creating an animatic to get that first look at timing for my short.

Then, after the animatic was looking as best as it could, though still rough to save on time, I began the wonderful transition to 3D.  As the 3D layout progressed I began to build on the framing from my animatic by adjusting the camera and positioning the characters appropriately. This is the stage I am currently at.  I found a  nice tune from magnatune.com I think it fits very well.

Reworking some story ideas.

I’ve been reworking some of my story ideas this week.  I’ve been trying to come up with more interesting endings.  Here are some of my favorites.

“Tree Bass”

The setting is a river.  There is a boy and his dad.
    We open with a boy running up to his dad to show him the big bass that he caught.  He is pointing up claiming that he caught it in a tree.  Then we flashback to the boy with his fishing line snagged in the water.  He jerks it hard and the hook flies up into the tree branches above his head.  When he pulls it down it has a big fish on the hook.
    We come back to the present and his dad smiles whle shaking his head.  Then we cut to dad’s interpretation of the flashback.  We see the boy jerk his line out of the water and a fish is on the end and it flys up into the tree branches. 
    The boy looking defeated walks around his dad to put his fish into the bucket.  His dad stands there smiling at his son.  Suddenly he gets splashed with water from above.  He looks up and gets very surprised.  Two big bass are swimming through the trees right above his head.

“Go Ahead”

The setting is a four-way-stop intersection.  The time is midafternoon.  There are two guys driving one is fat the other is skinny.
    We open with Fatty slowing to a stop at the stop sign while in the background, Skinny is stopping on the opposite street.  While Fatty looks away from Skinny to check for oncoming traffic he gives Skinny the go ahead waving motion.  But then we see Skinny checking his mp3 player and waving as well.  So they both look up at each other and both start to drive thinking that the other waved them through.  Both of them stop suddenly.  Skinny seems very upset but Fatty is trying to stay calm.  Fatty tries another approach and blinks his headlights but at the same time Skinny is honking his horn.  They both start to go then suddenly stop.  Now Skinny has become irrate.  So finally, Fatty stands up out of his car and motions with both hands for Skinny to go.  Skinny sits down and starts to drive thinking he’s won but suddenly he stops again.  Another car from the opposite of Fatty just got in his way.  Fatty smiles and waves as he drives around them.
